August 2014: Hot month for cool events

By Carol Thistle

Summertime in Gloucester brings waves of fun to our beaches—and thanks to so many volunteers and organizers, a veritable wave of music, crafts, and street fair events. Three of the best are on tap this week!

Blues You Can Use!

The third annual Gloucester Blues Festival takes place on Saturday, August 9th at Stage Fort Park. The event has emerged as one of the ‘hottest’ summertime music events on the North Shore. The festival offers world class line up of blues musicians, plenty of sunshine (we hope!) and scenic views of Cressey’s Beach. This year’s event features some of the better-known names in contemporary blues, including Debbie Davies, Victor Wainwright, Biscuit Miller, Tinsley Ellis, and New England’s own Ray Norcia head-lining Sugar Ray & the Bluetones.

The Gloucester Blues Festival features a beer garden, food vendors and many artisans selling wares. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and/or blankets for the “rain or shine event.” Gates open at 9 a.m. and the show gets underway at 11 a.m.

Cerami-riffic Fun!

The second annual Cape Ann Ceramics Festival kicks off on Thursday, August 7th and runs through Labor Day (Monday, September 1st) at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. The festival promotes the ceramic arts on Cape Ann, educates the public about talented masters of this art, and supports local, emerging artists through a series of shows and workshops. The festival is a great way to participate in a pottery class, watch experts at work and splurge on beautiful pieces. Like many events in the city, the Cape Ann Ceramics Festival has something for everyone—local talents like Marty Morgan and global greats such as a New Hampshire-based Hideaki Miyamura, whose work features metallic glaze akin to those found on rare ancient Chinese tea bowls (Miyamura will give an Artists Talk at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck on Sunday, August 24th at 5:30 p.m.)

Sidewalk Sale Celebration!

Kicking off on Thursday, August 7th and running through Saturday, August 9th, the 56th annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar offers residents and visitors a cornucopia featuring the city’s finest artists and artisans, food and entertainers and much more.
